The law on using a mobile phone while driving has changed
As of today, the law regarding mobile phone usage whilst driving has changed. From 1st March 2017, new penalties will be in place for those caught using a hand-held mobile phone behind the wheel.
Drivers will now receive a £200 fine and 6-points on their licence, up from £100 and 3-points. There will be no optional remedial course, whilst those who are caught repeat offending could face a £1,000 fine and a six month ban.
Additionally, new drivers who are caught within two years of passing their test will face a ban and retest, aimed at targeting young drivers who make up a significant proportion of offenders.
The new rules cover making phone calls as well as texting and the use of social media, particualy common amongst young drivers.
Research from the AA suggests that drivers could be twice as likely to crash while using a mobile as they are drink-driving. The AA has also released a video to raise awareness of text-driving which can be seen below:
