In December 2017 Ogilvie Fleet took the decision to support a number of nominated charities chosen by each of their teams in lieu of providing corporate Christmas gifts. In response to this the Ogilvie Fleet Southern Sales Team nominated the London based charity for the homeless, Shelter from the Storm as their chosen beneficiary.
This year the number of people sleeping rough in England has risen for the sixth year in a row, according to the latest official figures. An estimated 4,795 people are bedding down outside in 2017, according to the snapshot survey, an increase of 16% on the previous year’s figure of 4,134, and more than double the 2010 figure and London accounts for over 23% of this figure.
Co-founded in 2007 by Sheila Scott in response to her recognition of the homeless issue in her Borough of Islington. Shelter from the Storm has grown from a small group of homeless guests seeking shelter in a local church to where it is today helping more than 40 guests with overnight shelter, food and advice, 365 days of the year.
Based in Islington, North London Shelter from the Storm help a broad spectrum of people who have fallen on hard times. Whether it’s an ex squaddie with post-traumatic stress compounded by alcoholism, a domestic worker kept in slavery or a young person thrown out by their family for being gay, or someone may have simply fallen through the cracks of society each guest is treated as an individual by a team of willing volunteers. With amazing skill, experience and love, they pick up the pieces from the human fallout; be it finding a doctor, a counsellor, a lawyer, training, a job. Each evening the guests sit down to eat together; a simple ritual for most, but for many of the guests at Shelter from the Storm this will be the first time they’ve experienced such an event since they left home.
The charity’s mission is simple – to house and support the homeless in London whoever they are.
It costs just £18 per guest per day to provide a warm bed, breakfast, a hot evening meal and a range of services including – laundry, showers, counselling, and legal clinic
Shelters from the Storm do not receive any funds or grants from Government bodies and relies entirely on generous donations to survive. Everything donation is used purely to keep offering their services to those who need them.
